DIMENSIONS OF HUMANISTIC EDUCATION – THE PLEASURE OF LEARNING

Human beings live in continuous interaction — with one another, with other forms of life and with the inanimate world — forming relationships that shape their ways of being and acting. Periods of physical, geological and/or social metastability occur, enabling them to flourish, followed by turbulent times in which they are compelled to question their fundamental assumptions.

Confronted daily with anthropogenic climate change, technologies that threaten to escape our control, and a complexity of relationships and forms of knowledge that is difficult to navigate, we question who we are, what we are here for, and what we do, both now and in the future.

Bearing in mind Edgar Morin’s observation that, in order to understand the world that lies ahead, we need to be sensitive to ambiguity and ambivalence (or contradiction), we aspire to foster reflection on how the education system can equip future citizens with the tools to make sense of events and to face the challenges they may encounter in this increasingly complex world in an ethical, critical and creative manner. The XXII CIE-UMa Colloquium / II International Congress on Education aims to provide a space for reflection and debate on strengthening a humanistic education centred on the person and human dignity within schools, drawing on the research strands of Curriculum, Pedagogical Innovation, Educational Administration and Community Development.
